Johnny Hodges, except from 1951-'55, has been an Ellingtonian since 1928. Harry Carney has been with the band since he was 17, and that was 36 years ago. But when a man joins the Ellington band, he usually stays. It seems they change jobs as easily as they change clothes-and sometimes as often. one week they're with so-and-so's band, the next week with a different group.
